Tuesday Tidbit #46: On Accepting Help
Is it easier for you to give help or ask for help?
It has never been easy for me to ask for help but I've always tried to do my best to help others...whether it has been emotional or physical support, being a cheerleader or going on Therapy Dog visits. These are the things that have historically given me great joy.
Recently, I had surgery which required me to spend much time with my feet elevated and left me unable to drive for several weeks. I planned the surgery for when my mother (a teacher) would be off from school on holiday so she could help out, rather than during the school year when it would necessitate her taking time off from work. Each day on the week after my surgery when she was back in school, Mom would call several times a day asking if I needed her to bring food or anything else on her way home from work. But, with a few small exceptions, I always told her I was fine because I didn't want her to have to work a full day and then cater to me after school. I accepted help from some great friends, too, but it wasn’t easy for me to do. That's just the way I am.
Author and motivational speaker, Les Brown, said, "Ask for help not because you're weak, but because you want to remain strong." That's a very wise statement and one I wish it was easier for me to follow. What this quote means to me is that if I push myself beyond my limits, I won't have the strength to take care of myself or anyone else. Very wise, indeed.
I'm not sure that I will ever be completely comfortable asking for help but what I think I can manage is making sure that I allow others to carry the load when it becomes too much for me. I certainly wasn't about to drive against doctor's orders after my surgery but maybe I can learn to reach out during these times so there will be more times when I can be strong for other people.
