Tuesday Tidbit #40: On Promises
When I was growing up, my mother made a point never to promise anything unless she was completely certain it was going to happen. As much as I wanted her to tell me that, yes, she would be attending my band concert, I knew she wouldn't promise unless she was very sure she could get a babysitter for my brothers. The same thing went for a trip to Disney World. I think we were actually in the car with the suitcases before I heard her promise to take us there.
And, so, as is often the case, I grew up never promising anything unless I was sure I could deliver. That went for my daughter (still does) and goes for my clients, too.
Deadlines are funny things. Because I don't have a printing press in my basement
(or a basement, for that matter), I have to rely on other people's timelines as well
as my own. I have always met my Graphic Design deadlines, even if it has meant working
late to get jobs done. That's a great benefit about having a home-
But, the printing and shipping parts sometimes require expedited printing and/or delivery as was the case a few months back when a client needed a job designed, printed and delivered in less than three days to accommodate an overseas trip. I got the job designed that day and ordered same day printing and Next Day delivery. The job made it on time and I had a very happy client!
Although I was nearly certain I could make the client's deadline, I was still at the mercy of the printer and the shipper. In a perfect world, I would have promised the job would be there on time. But, this is not a perfect world and I want to always be taken at my word. Instead, I promised the client I would do everything in my power to meet his deadline.
Because it's just as important to me that I always keep my promises as it was to my mother all those years ago.
