Tuesday Tidbit #38: On Beginnings
When I was 11, I moved to a small town on the South Shore of Long Island. We were the second family to move onto a newly built street and I knew nobody. It was the middle of summer and I had several weeks before school would start. I was going to be the new kid entering sixth grade which, way back then, was the last year of elementary school. Did I mention that I knew nobody?
Not one to be deterred, I took it as a challenge when my mother told me to go out and find some friends. Since our street was brand new and we were only the second family on the block, I wandered to the next block and started knocking on doors. And, there, on Manta Court, I met my first two friends: a girl named Ann and a boy named Sal. I am still in contact with both of them (one just on Facebook but one is still a close friend) and, interestingly enough, they both remember my doing that! I don't want to give away just how long ago that was but let's just say we all have extraordinary memories!
And that was how I began sixth grade -
