Tuesday Tidbit #32: On Differences of Opinions
Are you a Coke person or a Pepsi person?
Family folklore says that my grandfather had an early opportunity to purchase stock in an up and coming soft drink called Pepsi. Unfortunately, he chose not to do so which meant we didn't become rich but then again, we never had to actually decide Coke or Pepsi. So, I grew up loving Orange Crush and Root Beer. And Tab.
Some Differences of Opinion are innocuous, like the Coke or Pepsi Challenge. Some are broader, bigger opinions like religion or politics. And, then there are the ones that come with business. My business Differences of Opinons, of course, center around design decisions because of my Graphic Design business.
What's the best way for us to handle our Differences of Opinion? And, is the best way the way we always choose?
The big Differences of Opinions are the trickiest and the hardest to work through sometimes. At times, we are so strong in our convictions that our Differences of Opinions often lead to hurt feelings, as in the case of religion, for example. The fine line with that subject, or any subject where emotions run high, is we want to be able to express our own convictions while still respecting other people's views. Personally, I think Respect is the key to handling such Differences of Opinions in an insightful, educational and truly humanistic way.
There's an old saying that goes, “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen
twice as much as we speak.” (-
Sometimes, maybe there isn't a right or wrong. Sometimes, it's all in the way you look at things. And, maybe that's good enough.
